WELCOME
The Scottish Branch of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) aims to promote the use of arbitration, mediation, adjudication and other alternative means of dispute resolution in Scotland, both domestically and internationally. We consider our website to be central to the achievement of that aim. Over time we will expand and develop its content further to meet that aim.

CONSUMER DISPUTE RESOLUTION SCHEMES
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Dispute Resolution Services provides a range of administered dispute resolution schemes for consumers who have service disputes.
These are funded so costs of application are low and provide a simple and speedy "documents only" way of resolving consumer disputes.
The schemes include an arbitration scheme for package holiday disputes, a conciliation and arbitration scheme for funeral disputes, an adjudication scheme for mobile phones and internet service disputes and a Scottish Fair Traders Scheme initiated by Trading Standards that operates within the Angus region of Scotland."

CHANGES TO THE CONSTITUITION
On 28th February 2005, the Chartered Institute's new Royal Charter was executed by Her Majesty the Queen under the Great Seal. This radically restructured the Institute to bring its constitution into line both with its current membership distribution and the requirements of and on such an institution in the 21st century. Membership (now over 11,000 in approx. 100 countries) is now more than 50% outside the UK and this is reflected in the new procedures for electing a President and a Board of Trustees, the former's role being ambassadorial in promoting the status and reputation of the Institute worldwide, the latter's being to manage the affairs of the Institute. Since Scotland is a separate legal jurisdiction from England & Wales, Scottish Branch is classed as an International Branch with consequent devolution of some responsibilities from CIArb HQ
Details can be obtained from our 'Honorary Secretary' Alistair Dean.
